The Gut-Healing Power of Stewed Apple

When it comes to gut health, few foods are as gentle and effective as stewed apple. This humble fruit is not only delicious but also packed with PECTIN, a remarkable fiber with numerous health benefits. Stewed apple is one of my favorite go-to recommendations for promoting gut healing and overall well-being. Check out my stewed apple recipe here.

Why stewed apple is incredible for Gut-Healing

Pectin is a type of soluble fiber found abundantly in apples, especially in the skin. When you stew apples, the pectin becomes more bioavailable, making it easier for your body to utilize its powerful properties.

Here are some of the key researched benefits of pectin:

Inhibits Harmful Bacteria

  • Pectin can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut, fostering a healthier balance of gut flora.

Alleviates Digestive Issues:

  • Whether you're dealing with constipation or diarrhea, pectin acts as a "gel-forming" fiber, helping to normalize bowel movements.

Supports Detoxification

  • Pectin binds to toxins in the gut, aiding in their removal from the body and supporting the detoxification process.

Heals the Gut Lining:

  • By promoting the production of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs), pectin supports the healing of the gut lining and reduces inflammation.

Reduces Toxic Metal Levels

  • Pectin helps in the excretion of toxic metals from the body, offering a gentle way to reduce their buildup.

Balances Cholesterol

  • Pectin can improve cholesterol levels by decreasing LDL ("bad" cholesterol), which is crucial for heart health.

Enhances Iron Absorption

  • Pectin may also play a role in increasing iron uptake, making it beneficial for those needing to boost their iron levels.

MCP Supplements vs. Natural Pectin??

While Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) supplements have been processed to be absorbable by the body, natural pectin found in apples, plums, and citrus is NOT absorbed. Stewed Apple Pectin has it’s healing affects locally in the gut. Personally, I prefer stewed apples over MCP supplements because they offer a whole-food source of pectin along with the added benefits of fiber and phytonutrients.

Important Considerations

Medication Interactions

  • Pectin may reduce the absorption of certain medications, such as Digoxin, Lovastatin, and Tetracycline antibiotics. To avoid this, take these medications at least two hours apart from consuming stewed apple.

Haemachromatosis

  • If you have haemachromatosis (iron overload), be cautious about consuming stewed apple alongside iron-rich foods, as pectin can increase iron absorption.

Stewed apple is more than just a yummy food; it's a powerful tool for supporting gut health and overall wellness. Whether you're looking to soothe digestive issues, support detoxification, or simply enjoy a nourishing treat, stewed apple is a perfect choice.
